PHILBIN MAKES SPLASH WITH COORDINATOR HIRES
One week after landing the Dolphins head coaching position, Joe Philbin has been hard at work interviewing the previous staff and potential new candidates. Today, Philbin filled the two biggest positions on his staff by naming Mike Sherman the offensive coordinator and Kevin Coyle the defensive coordinator. Sherman replaces Brian Daboll, who is rumored to be moving on to Kansas City and Coyle replaces Mike Nolan who left to become the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator. Just hours after taking the Dolphins head coaching job last week, the rumors of Philbin targeting Sherman as his offensive coordinator began. There was one problem that held up a possible re-union of Philbin and the former Green Bay Packers head coach. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching search was still going on and Sherman was rumored to be the front runner. Luckily for Philbin and the Dolphins, the Buccaneers made a head scratching hire of Greg Schiano which made Sherman available. Miami moved fast as they brought Sherman in yesterday for an interview and one day later signed him to a contract. Sherman joins the Dolphins after a four year stint as the head coach at Texas A&M University. Prior to to his time with the Aggies, Sherman spent five seasons as the head coach of the Packers and two years running the offense for the Houston Texans. Sherman was a highly sought after coach not only for the Buccaneers head coaching job, but for other open offensive coordinator jobs. The Cleveland Browns reportedly had Sherman at the top of their wish list but had to make other plans after he took the Dolphins job. Coyle, who was first reported last Saturday as a candidate for the defensive coordinator position, joins the team after spending the past 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals as defensive backs coach. While Coyle doesn't bring the buzz factor that Sherman does, he is also a well respected coach throughout the league. Just last year the Philadelphia Eagles wanted to hire Coyle as their defensive coordinator but the Bengals denied permission to speak with him. Current Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer interviewed with a few NFL teams about head coaching positions, including the Dolphins. It was reported that if Zimmer took a head coach job elsewhere, that Coyle was going to be promoted to Bengals defensive coordinator. Zimmer didn't land a head coaching job, which was great news for Philbin. The rest of the coaching staff should be in place rather soon after the hiring of both coordinators. Kacy Rodgers, last year's defensive line coach and Darren Rizzi, last year's secondary coach are rumored to be returning to their posts for next season. Other names that have been rumored about joining the staff are Mark Duffner, the linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Rossley, the quarterbacks coach for Texas A&M and Jim Hostler, the wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. JOE PHILBIN NAMED 10TH DOLPHINS HEAD COACH
The Dolphins three week head coaching search came to an end today as Green Bay Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin was name the 10th head coach in franchise history. Philbin, 50, replaces interim head coach Todd Bowles, who finished the 2011 season after Tony Sparano was fired on December 12th. Philbin, who ultimately was the Dolphins second choice after Jeff Fisher chose the St. Louis Rams on January 13th, comes to the Dolphins after running the Green Bay Packers offense the past five seasons. Under his watch as Offensive Coordinator, the Packers have been ranked in the top 10 of total offense every year. Before becoming the Packers Offensive Coordinator in 2007, he spent the previous four years with the Packers as the offensive line and tight end coach. While Philbin did not call the plays in Green Bay, he is credited for putting together every game plan and is a big reason for the Packers offensive success. Prior to joining the Packers in 2003, Philbin had 19 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level that included stops with Iowa, Northwestern and Harvard. Philbin inherits a Dolphins team that does have talent and with a few upgrades, and a soft schedule in 2012, could be playoff bound next season. Also, there are already rumors and speculation that the Dolphins will now target Packers free agent quarterback Matt Flynn in the upcoming free agent period that starts in March. Welcome to Miami coach Philbin! TELL US WHAT YOU THINK IN THE FINHEAVEN FORUMS! |

FISHER CHOOSES RAMS Fins Blow it With Loyalty to Ireland Several sources are reporting the Dolphins were the choice but their unwillingness to remove GM Jeff Irleand turned Fisher off and made the Rams his choice. This is but the latest in a ongoing list of blunders and ineptness by the Miami Dolphins ownership. Looks like 2012 will be more of the same. While some fans were not in favor of hiring Jeff Fisher there is definitely a greater sense of outrage as Stephen Ross continues to give unwaivering support to Jeff Ireland who fans have lost all support for. Now with no real experienced coach in play the Dolphins will most likely turn toward an unproven coordinator to once again restore the franchise to its glory. But in the end you have to ask...is their any relief for our pain? TALK ABOUT IT IN THE FINHEAVEN FORUMS! |

DOLPHINS END SEASON ON HIGH NOTE WITH 19-17 WIN

The Dolphins 2011 season came to end on Sunday and so did the career of Dolphins great Jason Taylor. Both Taylor and the Dolphins ended the day on a high note with a 19-17 win over the division rival New York Jets. The season did not go the way the Dolphins had hoped for with a 6-10 record, but after starting the season off 0-7, to finish it 6-3 was a little something to be proud of and to build on entering the offseason. The Dolphins will begin tomorrow searching for the next head coach and will start off by interviewing interim head coach Todd Bowles for the job. The Jets needed to win this game and have help to make the playoffs, but the Dolphins made sure they couldn't accomplish the most important part of the Jets playoff scenario. With stars Reggie Bush and Jake Long missing from the offense, the Dolphins had trouble moving the ball the majority of the game, but did put together an impressive 21 play, 94 yard drive in the 4th quarter that ended with a one yard pass from Matt Moore to Charles Clay that gave the Dolphins a late lead and helped clinch the victory. On defense, one of the biggest stories of the game was that defensive end Randy Starks picked off Mark Sanchez twice in the game and Marvin Mitchell had an interception late in the 4th quarter as the Jets were in the red zone looking to take the lead. Kicker Dan Carpenter connected on four field goals, including a 58 yarder as time expired in the first half. The kick probably could have been made from 68 yards or further. Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall had five receptions for 50 yards and finished the season with an impressive 81 receptions, 1,214 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Dolphins will pick #9 in April's NFL Draft after winning today. With the win the Dolphins moved down one spot in the order with the Carolina Panthers jumping ahead of them. The Dolphins season might be over, but a very important offseason has just begun for the team that will start with picking the next head coach. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK IN THE FINHEAVEN FORUMS! |
